days before the fateful events of mt. chimney, kyle finds himself with terrakion.

while the pokemon has found itself paired with kyle, it neither has the same connection with his patron, nor did it have a similar understanding of what kyle has in mind. they knew each other, but the connection of a legend with its avatar cannot be replicated easily.

the sword of justice visits them on their backyard, away from where most of his dog pokemon frolic. the two share a talk before the champion turns to his household and shouts.

"noah!" he calls. "can you come here for a moment?"

kyle isn't sure what he was doing right now, but given that it's a day off, he's probably washing the dogs or something.

the gym leader yoinks a hose, its lotad-shaped nozzle spewing water to rinse the dog's black-gray tangle. noah senses the mightyena's rise and before he can say anything, the canine shakes itself wildly. water flies. noah gets wet.[break][break]

noah wipes his brow of dog water and flaps his shirt against his chest in a futile attempt to dry it. no matter. the sun will dry it anyway.[break][break]

"what's up? does terrakion need a bath too?" noah says as he arrives.

the sword of justice scoffs. distrust with humans come easily to it, but leeway is given to the person that its own chosen has chosen.

"terrakion's fine with dealing with things at the background, but i'm sensing frustration with not contributing enough."

the few times he'd seen action with kyle are more coincidence than planned. without a pokeball to keep it at his beck and call, being at the right place at the right time usually is its lifeline for participation.

terrakion doesn't complain, however, as it's usually busy with the relocation of pokemon behind the scenes.

"come on. you and him against me, and, uh, someone else." probably his silvally. entei is usually around, but kyle would rather not have them play type advantages.

"it doesn't matter-" he turns to terrakion, nervously gauging its reaction. when it doesn't stir, he turns back to noah. "i think."

surprise takes over. it's only then did he realize the implications of his words and noah's worry, but given the pokemon's general lack of concern towards the subject, indifference comes off as something positive rather than not.

in an abrupt way to test out issues that concern his motives, he grabs noah by the wrist and places his hand on terrakion's head. if he has his read on both noah and terrakion right, then...

"trust me, dude. i wouldn't suggest something that would end up in a disaster!"

the apathy towards noah's presence remains, but given how stories about terrakion's legends always emphasize its distrust towards humans, being neutral can be seen as desirable.

terrakion closes his eyes and dips his head. it may not be the solution, but it's a compromise it's willing to take.

"terrakion needs this," he repeats, voice steeled enough to contrast what was usual, "and if it's not you, it's going to be someone else we both trust enough."

the pokemon may not have interacted much with the gym leader, but it sees him far too often with his own chosen that he basically knows him.

"we don't have time to look for someone who fits the criteria."

ultra deep sea and the resurfaced island were just a few examples.

"it takes time to build rapport with someone like terrakion, so i figured it's best to start doing that before rocket does something drastic."

he was chosen, but kyle had always felt that terrakion had wasted his choice on him. someone straightforward and candid like the cavern pokemon shouldn't be forced to be working behind the scenes, like what the champion had preferred.

besides, someone who bends the rules for his own gain doesn't seem fit to be called a sword of justice, but kyle had pushed compatibility issues aside for practicality. terrakion probably had the same in mind.

"he's pretty proud, so i need someone equally stubborn to match it. you're up for it, right?"

"i think you should be asking him instead of me," he tells noah.

terrakion doesn't react and simply shifts his face away from the two. indifference in these scenarios was one thing both of kyle and the sword of justice seemingly share.

"as long as he gets someone to partner up with-- someone he doesn't mind-- then i'm alright with it."

kyle turns to noah.

"are you scared?" he teases. "have you bullied someone and you're not confident with someone watching over your actions?"

he's pretty sure the lucario and riolu at home have already judged the gym leader for his idle thoughts whenever both of them are at home.
